Lipoedema and Varicose Veins

Lipoedema is a chronic condition that mostly affects women and is characterised by a symmetrical swelling in the legs, thighs, ankles and buttocks and sometimes the arms. Although it has not been confirmed, it is thought that lipoedema may have a genetic basis, as in some cases there is a family history of the condition.

Lipoedema can be extremely painful with the affected areas can become tender and there is a general tendency to bruise easily. Over time, lipoedema can result in fluid retention in the affected parts, resulting in a medical condition called lymphoedema. Varicose veins can be present in conjunction with lipoedema and lymphoedema, they occur because of the increased pressure on the venous system resulting in vein incompetency.

Lipoedema can have a significant impact on quality of life both physically and mentally.  At The Leg Vein Doctor we see a number of patients seeking to have their varicose veins treated prior to commencing surgical solutions for their lipoedma. We are also able to assist those who are seeking to have their veins ablated post lypo-extraction surgery if it is indicated.

Varicose veins are treated by Endovenous Laser Ablation and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy.
