Winter in Queensland...

As the thermometer drops so does the number of complaints about varicose veins. Admittedly “Brinter” (Brisbane’s winter) is pretty short however we should still get excited by the fact that the cold weather causes veins to shrink. The dilation makes it easier for the valves function properly resulting in less swollen ankles and cramps.

 

Sadly, it is not all good news…winter brings other challenges.

 

  • Reduced movement: most of us aren’t fierce enough to keep swimming through the winter months but just make sure you don’t stop, choose something else like a walk up Mt. Coot-tha. Keeping active means your calves will help pump the blood efficiently back to the heart.

  • Weight gain: extra kilos from comfort eating means that your legs are under more stress. The added pressure can increase venous insufficiency resulting in varicose veins.

  • Rugging up: wearing additional layers of clothes means that you can get out of touch with your body and any changes that might be occurring on the skin’s surface. Take extra time when moisturising to stretch and massage your legs.
